November 11 at the Shanghai art Museum opened 11th Shanghai Biennale. The theme of the Biennale this year — WHY NOT ASK AGAIN. Curators — Raqs Media Collective, a collective of internationally renowned artists and curators from new-Delhi. Ivan Isaev with the support of the project START involved in Biennale with the project “Leaving Tomorrow”. The exhibition is an interior room, created by artists.
a Project born of the realization that fear of the future has become commonplace in modern society. An idealized perception of progress has been discredited technological disasters and global ecological situation. Political and military conflicts in different parts of the world — from Hong Kong and Egypt to Brazil and Ukraine — do not allow people to feel safe; crises and rapidly spreading instability make vague perception of people of their existence. Around the world, in different societies there is an understanding that the current level of social welfare will continue to decline, and this idea stimulates people's desire to avoid the future, the desire to escape from “tomorrow”. Global utopian ideas and aspirations are replaced by specific strategies of survival in conditions of permanent crisis or everlasting “emergency”. This idea transforms the exhibition space into a "waiting room". The shape of space struggles between the living room, where the work of artists — with their Wallpaper and a chandelier, and a waiting room — a place from which to begin, a place from which to leave. In "waiting room" is full of problems we used to live. Even our personal space is often filled with militarism and hostility that remains of the utopias and broken future. We can see this in works of art represented here. Paradoxically, it seems that when designing our waiting room, we also design our future, our tomorrow. We are trying to design it so that to hide from the uncertainty of the future in the present. And what this means? This brings even more uncertainty than before. It makes our living space to be the departure hall, to be temporary, to be abandoned.
