Begetting monsters

Project author:

Rubezha Vekov

START's artist

The START project presents the first results of portfolio review session in Moscow art universities, opening the personal exhibition of HSE National Research University student (Faculty of design) Rubezha Vekov “Begetting monsters” on October 24 at the START platform for young art. Drawings, objects, indoor sculpture, video and zines will tell the story of beasts — characters of the artist’s integral mythology.

The artist, Rubezha Vekov:

“The initial point of my art is Maria, a small doll, a female creature without personality, but with a body hung up in state of perpetual begetting of beasts. It is absolutely unimportant who is concerned in conception of this “monster”. The most interesting issue for me is condition of a woman in each of these moments. Who cares what this abstract evil is, if it is impossible to catch it by the hand and construct the dialogue. There is a real body, a real story of a perpetual bearer (both physical and metaphysical) and a perpetual reproducer”.

In her works the artist combines organic substances with cloth, ceramics, paper and other materials. Rubezha uses the original technique of embalmment, giving chicken hearts, pork tongue, hair, human fat and blood the opportunity to become part of her works forever. The works, showing pinpoint accuracy, resemble medieval folios encrusted with precious stones.

Exposition of exhibition is constructed on the principle of “dark room of consciousness”, where a spectator stays one on one with narrative which resembles horror medieval story: we all like to be frightened, when a story is about someone else, the other. These “others” inhabit the space of exhibition, turning into something that might scare a spectator, intricate him or make him think about a variety of perennial hot points – issues, connected with objectification, violence, primal sacrifice, archetype of traitor and total misunderstanding
